This pit fired form has an opening right through the middle to accompany a handmade bound book.
Pit fired Form – 11”h x 5”w x5”l
Hand bound Book -9”l x 7”h x ¾”w
The pit fired form is hand built from a slab of clay. Fired to 1600 degrees which will lightly harden the clay. The form is then put into a barrel with sawdust and chemical salts. Pieces of wood fill the barrel and it is set on fire.
When the wood fire burns down
about half way a cover is placed over the barrel and the contents smolder for 24 hours.
There are no assurances when it comes to pit firing a piece of pottery. This piece has some green flashes along the sides and an iron oxide burned in stain mixed with black on the front of the piece.
The journal fits comfortably in the portal that passes through the pit fired object. The journal contains five sewn signatures of paper that equal 200 pages. The signatures are sewn around colored threads which are then poked through the spine and tied around a twig.
The cover paper is Ajisai Gold, a Japanese paper. The end sheets are Arches Text Wove, a cotton paper from France.
